Japan Festival Houston 2023 | Ikebana

With June now here, Japan Festival Houston 2023 may seem like ancient history. However, JASH is still relishing the special opportunities afforded by the Festival to share the rich cultural heritage of Japan.

On Day 2 of the Festival, Hermann Park’s Cherie Flores Pavilion was transformed into Miyabi Kan — a showcase of Japanese beauty.

Representatives from the Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu, and Ichiyo Schools of Ikebana gathered to share the Japanese art of flower arranging through 42 table arrangements, 2 large floor arrangements, and 3 ikebana demonstrations — one of the largest displays of ikebana arrangements at Japan Festival Houston ever!

The arrangements embodied the various elements of creativity of each school while communicating the mission of Ikebana International — uniting people through their mutual love of nature and enjoyment of ikebana.

In the words of Ikebana International Houston Chapter Co-President Shirley Bludau:

Acknowledgment is due to all the instructors who encouraged their student's participation in the exhibition. The arrangements were well executed, impressive, and the best displayed at the Japan Festival of Houston.

Japan Festival Houston 2023 | Kuraray Sumo Dohyo

Japan Festival Houston 2023 attendees got a ringside introduction to Japan’s national sport – sumo (相撲).

The first-ever Kuraray Sumo Dohyo featured Houston’s very own sumo stable -- Shōgeki Sumo.

The rikishi of Shogeki Sumo highlighted how sumo wrestlers defeat opponents who may be larger or stronger using the many Kimari Te (決まり手) or winning techniques of the ancient sport.

Viewers had the opportunity to get in on the fun – becoming a Yokozuna (grand champion) for a day by donning the mawashi loincloth and trying their hand at pushing opponents out of the ring or maneuvering opponents to the ground.

500 viewers were also lucky recipients of Kuraray yokozuna figurines. (Yes, the figurines are made from a material developed and produced by Kuraray!)

Japan Festival Houston 2023 | Minyo Crusaders

The highlight of the Japan Festival Houston 2023 ANA Matsuri Main Stage was, without a doubt, Minyo Crusaders!

Performing songs sung by fishermen ("Kushimoto Bushi"; "Mamurogawa Ondo"), coal miners ("Tanko Bushi") and sumo wrestlers ("Sumo Jinku"), Minyo Crusaders had the crowd grooving to their unique fusion of Japanese traditional folk songs (min'yō) with various rhythms and beats inspired from Latin, African, Caribbean, and Asian music.

“For Japanese people, min'yō is both the closest, and most distant, folk music” explains band-leader Katsumi Tanaka: “We may not feel it in our daily, urban lives, yet the melodies, the style of singing and the rhythm of the taiko drums are ingrained in our DNA”.

You can catch the group on tour in Europe this summer before a return to Japan for Fuji Rock Festival!

Also, be on the lookout for the release of a new Minyo Crusaders album!

Yoi! Yoi!

Japan Festival Houston 2023 | Chiba Nadeshico

Japan Festival Houston 2023 was not only a celebration of the event’s 30th anniversary, it was also a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Houston-Chiba City Sister City relationship. To help mark this special golden anniversary of friendship, Japan-America Society of Houston made possible the appearance of “Nadeshico” on the ANA Matsuri Main Stage.

Nadeshiko – a group of student performers from Chiba City’s Inage High School –  was selected to represent Chiba City through a competitive audition process.  The group’s performance was centered around Eisa – an art form from Okinawa that Inage High School has become known for owing to a long history of participation in Chiba’s Oyako Sandai Matsuri.

In true artist style, Nadeshiko chose to mix Eisa elements with traditional Japanese dance in a unique collaboration worthy of the group’s name — women of great beauty.

Nadeshiko not only captivated the Houston audience at the Festival with their beautiful vocals and energetic Eisa drumming moves, they also charmed Mayor Turner and Mayor Pro Tem Martin on a visit to City Hall on the eve of their Japan Festival debut!

Nadeshiko, thank you for joining us to celebrate the special bond between Houston and Chiba City!
