Over the past few days, Houston has watched with a heavy heart the scenes of devastation in and around the Noto Peninsula caused by the earthquake and ensuing tsunami that struck central Japan on New Year’s Day 2024, as well as the deadly collision of a Coast Guard relief plane with a JAL passenger plane that soon followed.
Recovery efforts have been slowed by the continued tremors in the region and the full scope of damage is not yet known. Reports as of January 4 reveal that more than 80 lives have been lost and dozens are still missing. Tens of thousands of survivors remain without power and water, while nearly 800 are isolated from help due to blocked roads.
Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) sends our sympathy to all those who have been affected by the disasters, and we extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.
As we recognize the resilience of our friends in Japan, Houston knows all too well that it will take a very long time for communities to rebuild and recover. As Japan reopens for business following the New Year holiday, victims, volunteers, members of relief organizations and government officials at all levels will be taxed to the limits of their endurance. Accordingly, we hope to provide assistance in areas needing attention.
As Japan came to our aid in the aftermath of flooding from Hurricane Harvey with contributions exceeding $50,000, we in turn demonstrated Houston's support for Japan in the wake of the Hiroshima-Okayama floods of 2018.
Japan-America Society of Houston is prepared to show that once more, HOUSTON STANDS WITH JAPAN. JASH will be collecting donations through HOUSTON FOR JAPAN. See link below.
All monies contributed to the campaign will be utilized to support trusted charities directly serving the people of the hardest hit areas of Ishikawa Prefecture, such as Peace Winds Japan, as to be identified with the assistance of the National Association of Japan-America Societies network which includes sister America-Japan Society organizations in Japan.
