What’s going on behind the scenes in the lead-up to the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo? One of Japan’s most influential theater makers and pioneer of the “quiet theater” movement, Oriza Hirata and his theater company Seinendan, in its fourth North American tour, offers a not-so-quiet comedic answer to this question through two one-act plays.

Control Officers recounts a single scene in which the top male competitor hopefuls in swimming undergo a routine doping test. Hilarity ensues when the control officers try to remain neutral as the ongoing interpersonal drama between the swimmers unfolds before them.

Hirata’s new companion piece entitled 100 Meters, depicting a tense waiting room of runners before their last qualifying race, will also be shown during the event. The runners’ differing personalities punctuate the unnerving atmosphere—some are silent, some are chatty and some talk about the future, while others reminisce.

Presented in collaboration with the Japan Society New York.

Performed in Japanese with English supertitles.

Space is limited to 100 attendees.

Tickets are $30.00 for members and $35.00 for non-members.
