[ONLINE] JASH & SATAKE Present: The School of Rice (お米の学校)

食欲の秋! Autumn is said to be the season in which the appetite awakens. As we welcome the cooler air and delights of this time of year, we are reminded of one of the most delicious foods of this season: 新米 (しんまい; shinmai), freshly harvested rice.

Rice is one of the major pillars of Japanese food culture. About 300 kinds of rice varieties for eating are grown nationwide in Japan. Similar to wine, rice as distinctive flavors dependent on soil composition, water, and region. Rice is also the key ingredient of onigiri!

In celebration of #OnigiriAction Month, join お米の学校 (Okome no Gakkou) in Houston, hosted by JASH and SATAKE USA, Inc. for an inside look into the Japanese rice culture. Through Naoji Otaki, a certified rice sommelier, participants will learn about everything from rice production, milling, the various types of rice, nutritional components, and ways to prepare this delicious part of the Japanese diet.

日本の食文化の土台であるお米は、主食用だけで約300種類が全国で栽培されており、品種や地域によって様々な味を楽しめます。そして高い精米技術により、さらに美味しく食べることができます。テキサス州Staffordに本拠を置くSatake USA, Inc.は、高い技術力で世界に貢献する企業です。

JASHとSatake USA, Inc.共催のお米の学校in Houstonでは、認定ごはんソムリエである大滝直司氏を講師に、稲作栽培、精米、調理法、お米の種類、栄養成分、そして炊飯まで、日本人にとってのおいしいお米やその文化を深く学ぶことができます。

About the Speaker:

Naoji OTAKI

Manager/Creative Director, Advertisement & Designing Section, Public Relations Department, Satake Corporation; Certified Rice Sommelier, Public Interest Incorporated Japan Cooked-Rice Association; Certified yoga instructor, International Yoga Association

Naoji Otaki was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1978. After studying abroad, he reaffirmed his belief in the health benefits of Japanese cuisine, especially the splendor of rice, and decided to take up a job to spread it to the world. After graduating from Hiroshima Institute of Technology, he joined Satake, a leading rice processing equipment manufacturer exporting its products to over 150 countries around the world.

With his outstanding designing ability, Otaki-san was soon transferred to the PR Department to engage in both public relations and advertising design work. Since then, his innovative talent, not only in product promotion, but also in product naming and design, has won many awards. In addition to promoting Satake products, as a rice sommelier, Otaki-san has been disseminating how to eat delicious rice as well as the nutritional benefits. His motto is, "The shortcut to good health is eating rice and proper exercise."
