While almost no one was looking, 2019 became a revolutionary year for the U.S. anime industry.

Through consolidation, the flowering of streaming media platforms and unexpected cash infusions, the anime business in North America is rising to new levels of maturation and scale.

And Texas has been at center of the transformation!

On July 31, 2019, the Japanese government, through its Cool Japan Fund, announced its investment of USD $30 million for shares of Houston-based Sentai Holding, LLC, parent company of Sentai Filmworks, HIDIVE and Anime Network.

To highlight Houston’s new role as the hub of Japanese animation in the US, JASH is partnering with Sentai to bring to the big screen an earlier work from the creator of the smash hit “Your Name” (君の名は), Makoto Shinkai, ahead of his new release, “Weathering with You” (天気の子).

Join us for a screening of “The Garden of Words” (言の葉の庭) and see Tokyo through the eyes of one of the most important Japanese animators leading the next generation of anime films.

To put Shinkai’s work into perspective and provide insight into the anime industry in the US and Texas, the screening will be followed by a presentation from Roland Kelts.

Kelts is considered the leading authority on contemporary Japanese culture and media. His articles, essays, and stories have been published in The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times, Harper's Magazine, Vogue, Newsweek Japan, The Los Angeles Times, The Yomiuri, and The Japan Times, and he is a frequent commentator on CNN, NPR, NHK and the BBC. This event is open to the public, free of admission with RSVP.
