Rakugo is a comic storytelling art that has entertained the Japanese for over 400 years. A lone storyteller, wearing a kimono and seated on the stage, performs a comical story by assuming the roles of many characters. He relies entirely on voice, gesture, expression, and two small props - an uchiwa (fan) and tenugui (hand towel) - plus the audiences' imagination.
The art of comic storytelling is very codified, and in order to succeed to the level of Master of the Word, one has to dedicate one's body and soul to it for at least twenty years. Ryuraku Sanyutei is one of these Masters. Since 2008 he has appeared in over sixty shows in Europe, performing in seven languages: Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, English, and, of course, Japanese. Master Ryuraku Sanyutei recently released a CD containing a rakugo performance of "Miso Mame" (miso beans) in these seven languages.
Laughs are guaranteed as the kneeling, kimono-clad Master Ryuraku Sanyutei shares dynamic monologues and dramatic stories.
